A welcoming space for tweens ages 8 to 12 to chat, play video games, and explore new consoles at the Waldo Branch Library.
Tween Gaming Club is back at the Waldo Branch Library on Tuesday, October 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. It's a welcoming space for tweens ages 8 to 12 to chat, play video games, and explore new consoles together. If you've got a kid in that age range who's always looking for a group to game with, this is exactly the kind of thing they're looking for.
The whole point is just to get kids together around the things they already love. It's not a tournament or a high-stakes competition; it's a spot to hang out, play through some games, and try out different consoles. The focus is as much on the chatting and the social side as it is on the gaming, so it works whether they're coming with a group of friends or showing up on their own to meet new people.
It's hosted at the Waldo Branch Library, one of the most popular branches in the Kansas City Public Library system. Over the years, it's grown into a neighborhood community center and a meeting place for local organizations, so it's a familiar spot for a lot of families around here. The current building opened in December 1988 as the South Branch, and it had a tech focus from the start: it launched with an electronic center of IBM PC and Apple IIE computers, electric typewriters, and printers. Before that, it was the Southwest Branch, an outpost at the old Southwest High School on Wornall Road. The gaming club fits right into that history of bringing technology to the neighborhood.
