A fashion show where teenage designers present garments inspired by the museum's collection, followed by a reception with a red carpet and refreshments.
The Teen Fashion Show returns to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art on Sunday, December 13. It's part of the museum's Teen Programs, a whole suite of offerings that invite teenagers to get creative, make new friends, and connect with art in ways they might not expect. The show itself is a pretty straightforward premise: participating designers take the runway in garments they've designed and produced themselves. Each piece is inspired by a work from the museum's collection, so the whole thing is a direct conversation between the art on the walls and the clothes on the runway.
That's the main event, but there's more to it than just the walk. Once the show wraps, it's followed by a reception with a red carpet and refreshments, where the audience can actually meet the designers. It's a good chance to hear how they got from a piece of art to a finished garment and to see the work up close rather than just from a seat in the house.
