A tabletop game session for teens at Waldo Branch, using the Dread system to create a spooky, tension-filled experience without prior experience needed.
Tabletop Frights! is coming to the Waldo Branch Library on Saturday, October 17, from 1:30 to 4:30 PM. It's a tabletop RPG session built around the Dread system, which swaps out dice for a Jenga tower to drive the tension—the higher the tower gets, the more you sweat. No experience is necessary, so you can jump in even if you've never played a TTRPG before.
The session is part of the Kansas City Public Library's Halloween Happenings series of teen activities. It's not the only thing on the calendar: Fall Fun: Haunted Houses lets you design your own haunted house, and Tween Art Club: Decorate a Jack-o-Lantern is there for the younger crowd. If you're into the spooky side of things, you can easily string a few of these together over the month.
The venue is the Waldo Branch Library, located at 201 East 75th Street in Kansas City. It sits right in the heart of the neighborhood it's named after and is one of the most popular branches in the system, serving as a community center and meeting place for local organizations. The current building opened in December 1988 as the South Branch, complete with an electronic center of IBM PC and Apple IIE computers, electric typewriters, and printers. Before that, the library was a small outpost known as the Southwest Branch at the old Southwest High School on Wornall Road.
