A tabletop role-playing game session using the Dread system; no experience necessary. Part of the Kansas City Public Library's 'Halloween Happenings' series.
Tabletop Frights! is coming to the Waldo Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Saturday, October 10, from 1:30 to 4:30 PM. It's a tabletop role-playing game session built around the Dread system, and you don't need any prior experience to play. If you've never sat at a table with a group of strangers to build a story together, this is a low-stakes way to get into it.
Dread is the engine that powers the game, and it's a bit different from the dice-rolling you might expect from something like Dungeons & Dragons. The session is part of the library's 'Halloween Happenings' series, so the mood is leaning into the spooky side of things. You'll spend the afternoon in character, working through a scenario with a group of other players, and the library handles the setup.
The session takes place in Room A at the Waldo Branch, located at 201 East 75th Street in the heart of the Waldo neighborhood. It's one of the most popular branches in the Kansas City Public Library system, and it doubles as a community center and meeting place for local organizations. The current building opened in December 1988 as the South Branch, and back then it came equipped with an electronic center of IBM PC and Apple IIE computers, electric typewriters, and printers. Before that, it was the Southwest Branch, an outpost at the old Southwest High School on Wornall Road.
