A DIY slime-making activity for children aged 5-12, facilitated in both English and Spanish, with all materials provided.
Slime Time | Hagamos Slime is happening at the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Saturday, October 10, from 1 PM to 2 PM. It's a DIY slime-making activity for kids ages 5 to 12, and the library provides all the materials, so you just have to show up. The activities are run in both English and Spanish, which fits right in with how the branch operates.
That bilingual approach isn't an afterthought here. The North-East Branch is a fixture of the Historic Northeast neighborhood, an area home to a large immigrant population and a growing number of young professionals. It serves one of the most linguistically diverse communities in Kansas City—around 55 languages spoken among its 9,000 residents—and it houses the system's primary collection of materials in Spanish and other world languages. Running a kids' program in both English and Spanish is just part of how it works.
The branch itself has some history. It dates back to 1914, when it was housed in Northeast High School, and it took its current form in 1986 when the library's East and Blue Valley locations merged. It moved into its current building three years later, and it went through an extensive renovation during the COVID-19 pandemic, reopening in 2021. If you've been around the neighborhood, you probably know it as a community hub as much as a place to borrow books.
