A sensory-friendly experience at Science City with adjusted sound and lighting for accessibility, presented by Building Hope for Autism.
Science City is hosting Sensory Sunday on Sunday, January 18, from 10 AM to 11:30 AM. The morning is presented by Building Hope for Autism, and it's designed specifically for guests on the autism spectrum and anyone with sensory sensitivities. The session runs before Science City opens to the general public, so you'll have the space to yourself without the usual crowds.
During these hours, the museum turns off sound effects and keeps the lighting minimal to create a more welcoming environment. The morning includes sensory-friendly activities and designated quiet areas where you can take a break if things get overwhelming. In partnership with Variety Children's Charity of Greater Kansas City, Science City also provides Sensory Backpacks, which come with a weighted blanket, sunglasses, a noise-canceling headset, and fidget toys. You can also catch a showing of the planetarium show Hazelnuts: In Search of the Perfect Planet at a much lower volume and with soft lights, and you're welcome to re-enter if you need to step out for a bit.
Science City is located inside Union Station, the century-old building that's become a Kansas City hub for culture, education, and entertainment. Beyond the museum itself, the station hosts traveling national exhibits and 3D movies on the Extreme Screen, so there's plenty to see around the building once the sensory session wraps up. And while the specific sensory programming runs from 10 to 11:30 AM, guests are welcome to stay until the museum closes at 5 PM.
