A classical music concert featuring pianist Tatiana Dorokhova performing the complete 32 piano sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven.
Tatiana Dorokhova is taking on the complete piano sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven at the 1900 Building in Mission Woods. It's a massive undertaking: thirty-two sonatas spread across eight concerts, a full cycle that the 1900 Building is staging to mark the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death in 2027. This particular date is Thursday, October 15, from 7:30 to 9:30 PM, though it's currently listed as postponed, so keep an eye on the venue's schedule for the new date.
Dorokhova has a pedigree that fits a project this size. She was born in Volgograd, Russia, into a family of musicians and started studying piano at age six. She trained at the Moscow Conservatory under Professor Alexander Mndoyants, who was a laureate of the 5th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. In 2023, she joined the International Center for Music at Park University, where she studies with Stanislav Ioudenitch, a Gold Medalist of the 11th Van Cliburn Competition. Since then, she's picked up laureate titles from the Gurwitz, Santa Cecilia, and Enescu International Piano Competitions.
If you're not familiar with the scale of what she's doing, Beethoven's thirty-two sonatas are often called the New Testament of piano music, and they cover his entire career—from the early, more classical works to the late, experimental pieces that pushed the instrument to its limits. Spreading them across eight concerts means you get to hear them in chunks rather than in one sitting, and it gives the whole cycle room to breathe. It's a long-game approach to one of the most significant bodies of work in the repertoire.
