A guided tour of The Linda Hall Arboretum, exploring its diverse tree collections, gardens, and the institution's history.
The Linda Hall Science Library & Arboretum is hosting a guided tour of its arboretum on Saturday, October 17, starting at 10:30 AM. A docent leads the way through the grounds, which are one of Kansas City's natural treasures and a genuine urban oasis. It's a walk through more than 300 trees representing over 130 species, including several Kansas City Champion Trees, alongside vibrant gardens and unique plant collections. Along the way, you'll hear about the arboretum's history and how it fits into the institution's broader mission.
That mission is tied to the library itself. The Linda Hall is an independent science research library that grew out of a private estate into a renowned scientific library—an evolution the institution commemorated in a book marking its 80th anniversary. The arboretum is part of that same legacy, a living collection that sits right here in the city.
If you're the kind of person who likes to wander on your own, there's also the 'Curious Naturalist Challenge' to take. It lets you explore the grounds at your own pace and help document the site's biodiversity, so you can keep looking around even after the guided tour wraps up.
