Jazz session with drummer and vocalist David Basse and his band at VOO Lounge.
David Basse & Band play VOO Lounge on Thursday, October 15, with the set starting at 8 PM. Basse is a jazz drummer and vocalist who's been active since the 1970s, and he's spent those decades carrying the torch of Kansas City jazz pioneers like Charlie Parker, Count Basie, and Jay McShann. If those names sound familiar, it's because they're the foundation of the city's jazz history, and Basse's work fits right into that lineage.
He's not just a drummer, either. He sings, and that dual role lets him lead from the back of the stage. His band, The City Light Orchestra, was featured on Wolf Trap and All That Jazz and played at the 1997 Inaugural Gala for President Clinton. That's a fair bit of ground to cover, from the local scene to a presidential gala, and it gives you an idea of the kind of experience he brings to the table.
VOO Lounge is a jazz bar and speakeasy in downtown Kansas City that bills live jazz nightly, and it also takes in parties, receptions, and social events with room for up to 100 guests. It's the kind of place that keeps the city's jazz tradition going on a regular basis, rather than just on special occasions. Basse and his band fit right into that rotation.
