A curated outdoor street art fair and market event held at City Market in the River Market district, featuring local artists and vendors.
Art on Walnut is back at City Market every Sunday from April through October, running 8 AM to 3 PM. It's a curated outdoor street fair in the heart of the River Market district downtown, presented by Art Garden KC in partnership with City Market. It pops up right alongside the City Market farmers market, so you can browse the art and then wander through the neighborhood's boutiques and restaurants or pick up some fresh produce while you're there.
Art Garden KC is the city's home for art festivals and pop-up markets, and it has a local story behind it. A group of artists from Pendleton Arts Block in Northeast Kansas City started it in March 2021 as a response to pandemic isolation. It began in a small park across from a local coffee shop and has since grown into more than 75 free community events a year, run by around 20 volunteers and five administrators. In 2023, the organization reported a $1.4 million economic impact on the local creative small-business community and $10,700 in support to local musicians, with partners including City Market, Port KC, and the Crossroads Arts District.
