Guided twilight walking tour through Woodruff Place with lantern-carrying guides sharing neighbourhood lore and historical tales.
Indiana Landmarks is taking their walking tour into the twilight on Friday, October 23, with a stroll through Woodruff Place. The tour kicks off at the Woodruff Place Town Hall, 735 Woodruff Place East Drive, and runs from 5:30 PM to 8 PM. It's a partnership with the Historic Woodruff Place Foundation and the Woodruff Place Civic League.
If you've never spent much time there, Woodruff Place is Indianapolis' first planned residential suburb. It was laid out in 1872 by entrepreneur James O. Woodruff as an upscale, park-like neighborhood of tree-lined esplanades and Victorian-era architecture. A century later, in 1972, it became the city's first neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
This October edition is a twilight walk led by lantern-carrying guides. Along the route, they layer in spooky insights, neighborhood lore, and haunting historical tales. The tour lasts about 90 minutes and covers roughly 1.5 miles, so you'll get a good look at the neighborhood's Victorian houses and wide, tree-lined streets as the light fades. It's a slower pace than a typical city walk, and the lantern light fits the October timing.
