Chamber music program of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra musicians exploring the music and stories of China, Japan and Korea, part of the 'History in Harmony' series.
Spirit of the East: Exploration and Resilience in Music comes to the Frank & Katrina Basile Theater at the Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center on Sunday, February 7, 2027. It's a chamber music program created by Amy Kniffen, presented in partnership with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
The music is performed by ISO musicians and features works by Karen Tanaka and Isang Yun. The program travels through the music history and stories of East Asia, looking at the traditions of China, Japan, and Korea and the cultural exchange that the Silk Routes fostered. It's told through live chamber music, storytelling, and multimedia, so you're getting more than just a concert—there's a narrative running through it.
Kniffen put this together as part of History in Harmony, the ISO's Education and Community Engagement series, which pairs live music with storytelling to illuminate history, culture, and the human experience. The focus here is East Asia, and the music of Tanaka and Yun serves as the thread connecting those different traditions and the exchange between them.
