Storytelling performance by Sheila Spencer exploring identity, family, caregiving and legacy.
Sheila Spencer takes the stage at the Indiana Historical Society on Sunday, Nov 8, for a storytelling performance titled What We Carry: Stories of Care, Legacy, and Becoming. It's part of Frank Basile's Emerging Stories series, and the set focuses on identity, family, caregiving, and legacy.
Spencer is an Indianapolis resident, born and raised in Los Angeles, and she works as a storyteller, spoken-word artist, author, educator, and workshop facilitator. Her performances weave together storytelling, poetry, reflection, and humor to look at identity, legacy, resilience, and renewal. She's an award-winning storyteller and a lifelong writer, and she's also the co-editor of Connections: Tell Your Story — A Family Anthology of Heritage, Gifts, and Legacy. Among several books she's written, For Those Who Care: Reflections to Nourish the Caregiver speaks directly to the caregiving theme that runs through this performance.
The venue is the Indiana Historical Society at 450 West Ohio Street, a private nonprofit membership organization that's been Indiana's storyteller since 1830. It collects, preserves, interprets, and shares the state's history, and it maintains the nation's premier research library and archives on the history of Indiana and the Old Northwest. Its visitor exhibitions are presented under the name 'the Indiana Experience' and are housed in the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center. Beyond the exhibitions, the Society supports local museums and historical groups, publishes books and periodicals, sponsors teacher workshops, and offers youth, adult, and family programming.
