Community presentation by Indiana Legal Services on the basics of estate planning, covering how to pass on property and avoid common legal pitfalls.
Indiana Legal Services is hosting a community presentation on estate planning at the Haughville Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library on Thursday, November 19, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. It's part of the library's financial literacy program, and the session is aimed at seniors and adults.
The talk is built around the basics of estate planning, the kind of stuff that's easy to put off until it feels urgent. They'll go over practical strategies for passing on property titles and how to avoid the common legal pitfalls that can trip up families when they're already dealing with a loss. The goal is to help people plan for the future with some confidence, protect their assets, and leave their heirs with a smooth transition rather than a legal headache. If you've been meaning to get your affairs in order but didn't know where to start, this is a good place to get a handle on the fundamentals.
The Haughville Branch itself has a bit of a story. It's the longest continuously operating branch in the Indianapolis Public Library system, having opened on the city's east side in 1896 before moving to Haughville village after 1897. A 1904 fire partially destroyed the former town hall on Georgia Avenue, and for a long time, a storefront in the Michigan Plaza Shopping Center served as the branch. The current 12,000-square-foot library on West Michigan Street has been in place since 2003.
