Reading program in which children aged 6 to 11 take turns reading to a registered therapy dog at the Michigan Road Branch.
Paws to Read is back at the Michigan Road Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library on Saturday, November 7, from 2 PM to 3 PM. It's a reading program for beginning or reluctant readers aged 6 to 11, and the whole thing is built around a simple, low-pressure setup: kids take turns reading aloud to a registered therapy dog in fifteen-minute sessions. If you've got a child who gets nervous reading in front of a class or just needs a little more confidence with their books, this is exactly the kind of thing that helps. A dog doesn't correct your pronunciation or judge you when you stumble over a word; they just listen, which takes the edge off and lets a kid focus on the story instead of the stress of being watched.
Because it's a one-on-one format, the sessions are short and focused. Each child gets their own fifteen minutes with the dog, so they aren't competing for attention or rushing through a group activity. It's a quiet, patient way to get some practice in, and for a lot of kids, that's the difference between reading feeling like a chore and it feeling like something they can actually handle. The therapy dog is there for the whole hour, and the sessions run one after another throughout the afternoon.

One thing to keep in mind: spots are limited, and this session is already full. If you missed out on a slot, there is a waitlist you can join, so it's worth checking in with the library to see if a space opens up. The program runs at the Michigan Road Branch, located at 6201 North Michigan Road in Indianapolis, on Saturday, November 7, from 2 PM to 3 PM.
