Two-hour course led by writer Arriel Vinson on memory as a form of willed creation, with writing, discussion and a meditation.
Arriel Vinson leads a two-hour writing and yoga course, Memory as Meditation & Yoga, at the Athenaeum Foundation on Saturday, October 24, from 12 PM to 2 PM. It's a session that treats memory as a deliberate act of remembering and a form of willed creation, taking Toni Morrison's Memory, Creation, and Writing as its guide.
The first half is focused on the page. You'll look at how memory informs both body and story, and talk through short, contemporary works from different genres that use memory and observation as storytelling tools. From there, the session moves into a generative prompt that draws on your own lived experiences. The second half shifts to the mat: an hour of flow followed by a meditation to close things out. You'll need to bring a yoga mat, paper, and a writing utensil.
Vinson is a Midwestern writer whose debut YA novel-in-verse, Under the Neon Lights, won the 2026 Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Award and was a 2026 BCALA Fiction Honor, a Reese's Book Club LitUp selection, and a Junior Library Guild Gold Selection. She earned an MFA in Fiction from Sarah Lawrence College, is a Tin House YA Scholar and Walter Grant recipient, and her sophomore novel, If This World Were Mine, is due January 26, 2027.
