Concert by singer-songwriter Josh Garrels with supporting act Taylor Armstrong at the open-air HI-FI Annex venue.
Josh Garrels plays HI-FI Annex on Thursday, October 22, with Taylor Armstrong opening. It's a homecoming of sorts: Garrels was born in South Bend, Indiana, and this show brings him back to the state where he started.
Garrels is a singer-songwriter whose work pulls from a wide range of sounds. He spent his teens in punk bands before coming to the Christian faith, which has since become a major thread in his music. On his own label, Small Voice Records, he put out Over Oceans in 2006 and Jacaranda in 2008. In 2011 came the double album Love & War & the Sea in Between, influenced by his adopted home of Portland, Oregon; it was named Christianity Today's album of the year and The Gospel Coalition's album of the decade. Since then he's released Home in 2015, the holiday-themed The Light Came Down in 2016, and Chrysaline in 2019, which he co-produced with Isaac Wardell. His songs have appeared on Netflix's Virgin River, CBS' The Ghost Whisperer, and ESPN's Outside the Lines.
Across those records, the sound moves from pastoral indie folk to hip-hop, held together by personal, introspective lyrics. The set will be presented by MOKB Presents.
