Hip-hop concert by Brother Ali with DJ Abilities at HI-FI, inside the historic Murphy Arts Center.
Brother Ali plays HI-FI on Friday, November 13, with DJ Abilities on the decks. The show is presented by MOKB Presents, and it's Ali's first time in Indianapolis in quite a while.
If you're not familiar, Brother Ali is a Minneapolis-born hip-hop artist, speaker, and community leader with a career stretching back over two decades. He's put out eight critically acclaimed albums and has spent years working with some of the biggest names in the culture—he's been mentored by Chuck D and Rakim, and he's appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Conan.
He came up as a student of hip-hop's golden age, breaking through in the spring of 2000 with Rites of Passage, a self-produced, cassette-only storytelling album on Rhymesayers Entertainment. Since then, his music has run from purposeful to passionate, always soulful and true to the boastful heritage of the culture. His social-justice message has landed him on government watch lists, and he's lectured at universities from Princeton to Stanford and delivered the keynote at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum.

Beyond the music, he co-founded The Gemali Project, which helps Muslim converts and spiritual seekers access the Islamic tradition, and he launched The Travelers Podcast from his home in Istanbul. He'll be joined on stage by DJ Abilities, so it's a full hip-hop set rather than a solo turn.
HI-FI is at 1043 Virginia Ave #4, inside the historic Murphy Arts Center. Doors open at 8 PM and the show starts at 9 PM.
