English Conversation Circle

The Southport Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library is hosting another English Conversation Circle on Monday, October 26, from 6 PM to 7 PM. It's one of several circles the library runs across the city, designed for adults who want to practice and improve their English conversation skills in a comfortable, welcoming place. If you've been looking for a low-pressure way to get more comfortable speaking, this is exactly that.

Each session is led by a TESOL-trained facilitator, so there's someone there who knows how to guide the conversation and help you find the right words when you're stuck. The focus is on casual conversation, and the topics tend to cover American culture, idioms, phrasal verbs, and some grammar—the kind of things that come up in real life rather than in a textbook. It's for adults, and seniors are welcome, so you'll be in a mixed group of people at different stages of their English journey.

The Southport Branch itself has a bit of a story. It started back in 1967 as a small storefront in the Madison Square Shopping Center, and the current 15,700-square-foot building opened in 1974 on East Stop 11 Road. Even before that move, a group of Perry Township residents raised more than $5,000 to provide additional books for the new building, so the branch has a long history of community support behind it. The conversation circles are made possible by The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation.
