Free Día de Muertos celebration with music, a Catrina parade, folkloric dance, art-making, a market and community altars at the Eiteljorg Museum.
The Eiteljorg Museum is hosting a Día de Muertos Community Celebration on Saturday, October 24, from 10 AM to 7 PM. The museum is putting it on with Arte Mexicano en Indiana and Nopal Cultural, and the whole day is built around the holiday's Indigenous roots.
The music is a big part of it. You'll hear Yuri Rodriguez, Hurakan and El CirCo—a tribute band to La Maldita Vecindad—and Mariachi Internacional de Bloomington. There's also a Desfile de Catrinas by Mujeres Conectadas, and folklórico dance from Grupo Folklórico Macehuani, Grupo Folklórico Infantil Macehuani, and Ballet Folklórico Mosaicos. Between the sets, you can meet artists, shop the mercado, and make art to take home.
Beyond the performances, there are community-curated altars and ofrendas on display. They're part of the Día de Muertos Community Altar and Art exhibit, which runs from October 10 through November 2 and is free during the museum's regular hours. The celebration itself is free, and you can reserve tickets online in advance.
