Free all-ages Americana and psych-folk show by Bloomington artist Connor McLaren with supporting act Booze Hounds Bluegrass.
Connor McLaren plays HI-FI on Saturday, January 2, with Booze Hounds Bluegrass opening. McLaren is a Bloomington, Indiana artist working in Americana and psych-folk, and the show is presented by MOKB Presents.
His path to a record deal started on the street. While attending Appalachian State University, McLaren and his brother Alec began busking outside the concerts of their favorite bands, tipping the takings into a box they called the "Weed Fund." Indie icon Ben Kweller took notice and invited the brothers to Texas to write and record. In the spring of 2022, McLaren signed with the Austin indie label The Noise Company, and his debut album, Innocence, followed in 2023, produced by Kweller.
There are a few other threads to the sound. McLaren takes a yearly pilgrimage to Jamaica, which left him with a distinct love of reggae, and he cites Bob Dylan, The Who, Todd Snider and Lou Reed as influences. That mix of folk, psych, and roots music is what he brings to the stage.
