Live improv comedy show where two teams compete for laughs in a family-friendly format at The Wit Theater.
ComedySportz is bringing the Midwest Invitational to The Wit Theater this weekend, starting Friday, October 16. If you've never seen them, the format is pretty easy to get: two teams go head-to-head in a competition for laughs, with a referee keeping things clean. It's billed as family-friendly, so it's the kind of show you can bring kids to without worrying about where the jokes are headed.
ComedySportz has been around Indianapolis longer than almost any other live comedy show in town. It opened in February 1993 at Theatre on the Square in Fountain Square, spent 21 years on Mass Ave, and now plays at The Wit Theater on Shelby Street. The Indianapolis chapter is one branch of CSz Worldwide, which stages the same format in more than 25 cities, so the whole competitive, sport-like setup is a global thing.
Because it's a competition, the energy changes depending on who's on stage. The referee doesn't just keep the peace; they're a part of the act, and the teams are playing for the crowd's reaction. Since the whole thing is improv, no two matches end up the same way, and the family-friendly label means it's safe for a wide range of ages.
