Beginner Haitian Creole conversation circle at the Wayne Branch Library to practice basic greetings, numbers, shopping and other everyday phrases.
The Beginner Haitian Creole Conversation Circle meets at the Wayne Branch Library on Tuesday, November 3, from 6 PM to 7 PM. It's a one-hour session, and the library describes it as a way to celebrate diversity, promote cultural exchange, and help residents communicate across cultural boundaries. If you've ever wanted to pick up some Haitian Creole, this is a low-stakes way to get started.
The curriculum covers the practical stuff you'd actually use in a conversation. You'll work through basic greetings, how to introduce yourself, and how to ask simple questions. From there, it moves into everyday scenarios: ordering food, numbers and counting, shopping, colors, telling time, the seasons, and directions. You'll also get a handle on the verbs 'to have' and 'to be,' and the sessions bring in Haitian arts alongside the language work.
The venue is the Wayne Branch Library at 198 South Girls School Road in Indianapolis. The branch first opened in December 1969 in a shopping center at 7341 Rockville Road, and it moved into a permanent 13,500-square-foot home in 1984. It went through a $1.1 million renovation in 2020 that kept its split design, with separate wings for children and adults.
