Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness plays HI-FI inside the historic Murphy Arts Center on Virginia Avenue.
Andrew McMahon plays HI-FI on Sunday, October 25, inside the Murphy Arts Center at 1043 Virginia Ave. It's a single-name bill, and if you've followed his work, you know that name has covered a few different lives.
McMahon started as a child prodigy on the East Coast before moving to Southern California as a teenager. In 1998, he co-founded the pop-punk band Something Corporate, where he sang, played piano, and wrote songs that hit the charts in the early 2000s with Leaving Through the Window and North. In 2005, he shifted to a solo project, Jack's Mannequin, which put out the Gold-certified Everything In Transit and the Billboard Top 10 albums The Glass Passenger and People and Things. Since 2014, he's been releasing music under his own name, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, with the top 5 Alternative radio single "Cecilia and the Satellite," followed by Zombies on Broadway, Upside Down Flowers, and Tilt At The Wind No More.
Across those three projects, he's sold nearly 2.5 million albums and passed 1.3 billion streams. The path wasn't a straight line, either. At 22, he fought a public battle with leukaemia, which led him to start the Dear Jack Foundation in 2006 and eventually to his 2021 memoir, Three Pianos. That's a good deal of ground to cover in one career, and it's a fair bit of catalog to pull from for a single set.
