American Aquarium, the North Carolina Americana and alt-country band of BJ Barham, plays HI-FI in the historic Murphy Arts Center in Fountain Square.
American Aquarium play HI-FI on Saturday, October 31, 2026. The North Carolina-bred Americana, folk and alt-country band has been fronted by singer-songwriter BJ Barham for nearly two decades, and they're coming to Indianapolis with their latest record, The Fear of Standing Still.
That album is their tenth studio LP, and it marks a sharp turn from the stripped-down acoustic approach of 2022's Chicamacomico. Instead of keeping things quiet, they've piled on explosive riffs and hard-charging rhythms. It was recorded live at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles with producer Shooter Jennings and mixed by four-time Grammy winner Trina Shoemaker. The songs draw on Barham's ten years of sobriety, and Katie Pruitt lends guest vocals to "Southern Roots."
Across the record, the band blends country, rock and folk influences with lyrics about working-class life, Southern identity, generational trauma and the dismantling of reproductive rights. It's a wide reach for one album, but that's the ground they've been covering for years.
