Concert by ADULT. and A Place To Bury Strangers, with Angel-Maker as supporting act, at HI-FI in the historic Murphy Arts Center.
ADULT. and A Place To Bury Strangers play HI-FI on Thursday, November 19, with Angel-Maker opening the bill. It's a pairing of two acts that have spent decades building their own corners of the noise and synth worlds, and both are coming off new records.
ADULT. are a dystopian Detroit synth-punk duo, Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller, who've been active for more than 25 years. Their tenth LP, Kissing Luck Goodbye—their fourth with Dias Records—is their most visceral, urgent and angry record yet. Kuperus' vocals take center stage here, and a recurring motif of laughter runs through the songs. For this one, they went back to their early 2000s Anxiety Always era of bass-guitar songs, and producer Nolan Gray helped them build a dense soundscape from thrift-store samples, field recordings and shop-vac buzzes. Miller dedicated the album to their late friend and Nitzer Ebb collaborator Douglas McCarthy.
A Place To Bury Strangers, fronted by Oliver Ackermann, released Synthesizer on October 4, their seventh album and one they describe as a record of reinvention. It was written in the band's Queens studio with a new lineup that includes friends John and Sandra Fedowitz, and it's built around a custom-built synthesizer. The lead single, "Disgust," has a live sound to it. Ackermann also founded Death By Audio, the DIY space and effects-pedal factory whose chaotic, collectivist ethos has shaped the band's work since the beginning.
