Free public reading and conversation of ten-minute plays by women+ playwrights commissioned to explore the state of democracy in America.
4th Wall Theatre Company is hosting Women+ on the Edge of Democracy on Friday, October 30, at their space on Spring Street. It's a public reading and conversation, and it's free to attend.
The project started at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts in partnership with the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, which put out a nationwide invitation to explore democracy through theatre, conversation, and community. From there, they commissioned 36 acclaimed women+ playwrights to write ten-minute plays on the state of democracy in America. The Houston staging brings together readings produced by 4th Wall Theatre Company, Mildred's Umbrella Theatre Company, Dirt Dogs Theatre Co., and The Ensemble Theatre.
Because it's a reading rather than a fully staged production, the focus stays on the writing. You'll hear a sequence of these short plays, each one a different take on the same central question, and the evening is built around the conversation that follows. It's less about a single story and more about a collection of voices on the same subject.
