Blues concert by Tommy Castro & The Painkillers with special guest GA-20 at The Heights Theater.
Tommy Castro & The Painkillers play The Heights Theater on Thursday, November 12, with GA-20 opening. Castro is a California-based blues and rock guitarist and vocalist who's been at it for four decades and put out 17 albums along the way. He plays a gritty, soul-healing blend of blues, R&B and funk, and in 2023 he won his fourth Blues Music Award for B.B. King Entertainer of the Year, bringing his total to ten.
He grew up in San Jose, born in 1955, and first picked up a guitar at 10. He spent his early years jamming at JJ's Blues Bar, where he saw John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells. By 1985 he was lead singer and guitarist for the Bay Area blues band NiteCry, and later joined Warner Brothers' The Dynatones. He formed the first Tommy Castro Band in 1992, which became the house band for NBC's Comedy Showcase for three seasons. He joined Alligator Records in 2009. Guitarist Joe Bonamassa calls him "top of the heap among blues guitar players."
