A themed musical performance by the Houston Brass Quintet celebrating the spirit of Texas and American music, part of the Young Audiences of Houston series.
Stars, Stripes, & Spurs comes to Miller Outdoor Theatre on Wednesday, October 7, with the Houston Brass Quintet taking the stage. It's presented by Young Audiences of Houston, and the whole thing runs from 11 AM to 12 PM.
The title gives you a good sense of where the set is headed. It's a themed performance that pulls together a few different threads of the American sound—patriotism, jazz, western flair, and spiritual tradition—all played on brass. You'll hear Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever for the patriotic side, Moment for Morricone for the American West, Concerto for Cootie for the jazz, and Amazing Grace for the spiritual. It's a broad reach for one hour, and the brass quintet format keeps it all in the same family.
There's a bit more to this than just the music. The show is part of Young Audiences of Houston's Young Audiences Passport! series, which is aimed at PK-12 audiences. Kids get a passport at each show, and if they collect stamps from all four performances in the series, they get a special goodie bag. YAH travel hosts run each performance, and there are giveaways for the first 200 people who show up.
