Interactive jazz performance by The Graeme Francis Trio, celebrating a century of pop music by pairing pop hits with jazz standards.
The Graeme Francis Trio are back at Doc's Houston on Tuesday, November 24, for another night of On the Record: A Century of Pop Hits!. The trio consists of Graeme Francis on drums, Jose-Miguel Yamal on keys, and David Craig on bass.
On the Record started as a one-off called Pop Gets Jazzed!, which played during Doc's opening week in November 2025, and has since become a residency. The trio hunts for the jazz inside pop songs, pairing a Michael Jackson track like "Billie Jean" with an old jazz tune such as "Take the A Train." Each night they cover a different slice of pop history—from Broadway and the Beatles to Michael Jackson and Nirvana—tracing how much of it started out as jazz.
The venue is Houston's premier supper club, set inside Montrose's 1936 Tower Theatre, a movie palace whose stage has hosted legends from Ella Fitzgerald to Leon Russell. Opened in 2025 by bandleader and pianist Doc Watkins, it brings the golden era of the supper club back to Westheimer, with chef Matt Fanella's classic supper club fare and the kitchen and bar open all night.
