Jazz trumpeter Mike Sailors performs with vocalist and bandleader Aubrey Logan at Doc's in Houston.
Mike Sailors plays Doc's on Saturday, December 5, with Aubrey Logan. Sailors is a jazz trumpeter, arranger, and composer based in Austin, originally from Charleston, South Carolina, and he's spent a good part of his career working across a few different worlds at once.
On the jazz side, he's played the Blue Note in Tokyo, Sapporo, and New York, as well as Carnegie Hall, Yoshi's, and the Bowery Ballroom. He's worked as a sideman with the Birdland Big Band, Bobby Sanabria, The Multiverse Orchestra, The Hot Sardines, and the Captain Black Big Band led by Orrin Evans. He's also an active trumpet player on Broadway, appearing in Beautiful - The Carole King Story, Be More Chill, and The Prom, and he served as music director for Sleep No More from 2014 to 2017.
His arranging work reaches a few different circles, too. He's arranged for Mack Avenue Records, Decca Records, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and Arturo O'Farrill, and he contributed arrangements to Lady Gaga's 2023 Jazz and Piano run at Park MGM in Las Vegas. Since 2019, he's been on the faculty of The University of Texas Butler School of Music, where he leads the Jazz Trumpet Studio. He also serves as music director for Aubrey Logan and her Big Band, so it makes sense to see them on the same bill here.
