The 18-piece Woody Witt Big Band performs the music from Cowboy Bebop, synced with scenes from the anime, in a jazz supper club setting.
The Woody Witt Big Band is bringing the music of Cowboy Bebop to Doc's Houston on Friday, October 16. It's an 18-piece jazz orchestra led by saxophonist Woody Witt, and they're playing the score from the anime live, synced up with scenes from the series projected on a ten-foot by twenty-four-foot screen. The whole thing runs in time with the footage, so you're watching the show and hearing the music played right in front of you.
Witt built this band specifically to play the Cowboy Bebop score live, and the set expands on the original material with new charts by Jamie Langan. Langan's arrangements stay true to the sound Yoko Kanno and The Seatbelts recorded for the anime: hard-bop horns, a Latin rhythm section, and a torch song or two. The program also includes big band versions of pieces the band had previously played as small-group charts, so you'll hear some of the same material reimagined for the full orchestra. Witt describes the show as one of the most important intersections between jazz and popular culture.
