Weekly comedy open mic night featuring amateur and professional comedians working out new material in a relaxed atmosphere.
The Riot Comedy Club hosts its late-night standup comedy open mic every Monday at 10 PM, at 1925 Washington Avenue in Houston. It's one of the city's most active open mics, and the way the night is structured gives you a front-row seat to the comedy process at its rawest.
The first half of the show is left entirely to chance. A sign-up sheet goes out an hour before showtime, and names are drawn by lot to determine who gets a spot. That means the early part of the night is a bit of a gamble—you might get a seasoned pro testing out a new bit or a complete first-timer stepping onto a stage for the very first time. The second half is different, filled with booked comedians who have a set time locked in.
Because of that mix, the room draws a wide range of comics. You'll see experienced names working through their newest material alongside newcomers still finding their voice. It's a good place to catch a comedian in the middle of figuring out a joke, and since it's an open mic, you're seeing the rough drafts rather than the polished sets you'd find at a headliner's show.

There are a few practical things to keep in mind before you head over. Entry is restricted to over-21s with photo ID, so make sure you've got yours on you. Free parking is available, and the club serves food and cold drinks if you want something to snack on while you watch. The show starts at 10 PM, so it's a late one—perfect if you're looking for something to do on a Monday night.
