Gloria Majule's dramedy about a Tanzanian ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro, directed by Shariffa Ali and staged at Alley Theatre's Neuhaus Theatre.
Alley Theatre is bringing Uhuru to the Neuhaus Theatre in Houston, running from October 16 through November 8, 2026. It's a new dramedy written by Gloria Majule and directed by Shariffa Ali, and it opens as part of the 2026 Alley All New Festival—a three-day program of staged readings by Liz Duffy Adams, Jake Brasch, Majule, and Luis Quintero.
The play centers on a 'Tanzanian-only' ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro. A Tanzanian-American tourist, two missionaries, and their guide have to decide who truly deserves a place on the mountain, and the climb turns into a confrontation over access and identity. It's described as sharp and hilarious, though it doesn't shy away from the rougher edges: there's explicit language and sexual content, and the production uses haze and strobe lights. The cast includes Oghenero Gbaje, Sprite, David Gow, Henry, Michael Oloyede, and Mshale, with Karishma Bhagani as Swahili dialect coach and cultural consultant, and Lacey Erb on projection design.
Uhuru is supported by the Gardenia Foundation and The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust. The Alley even put together a specialty cocktail, The Freedom Fizz, inspired by the show. The Neuhaus Theatre is one of the stages at the Alley Theatre, which has been producing in Houston since 1947 and keeps a full-time resident company of actors and artisans, putting on up to 16 plays a year.
