Annual concert showcasing the cultural diversity of Texas through accordion music, featuring zydeco, polka, conjunto, Cajun, Tejano, and swing.
Rockin' Dopsie Jr. and The Zydeco Twisters headline the 37th Annual Accordion Kings & Queens Concert at Miller Outdoor Theatre on Saturday, October 10, from 7 PM to 10 PM. It's a night that puts the accordion front and center, bringing together zydeco, polka, conjunto, Cajun, Tejano, and swing. The concert has been running at Miller since 1989, and it's presented by Texas Folklife, a statewide non-profit that connects communities to cultural arts and artists. The series is supported by the Board and Members of Texas Folklife and the City of Houston through the Miller Theatre Advisory Board, with help from the Texas Commission on the Arts, H-E-B and the Texas Music Office.
Rockin' Dopsie Jr. and The Zydeco Twisters carry on the zydeco tradition pioneered by their father, Rockin' Dopsie Sr. The family ensemble features frontman, washboard player and vocalist Rockin' Dopsie Jr. (David Rubin), his brother Tiger (Alton Rubin Jr.) on drums and vocals, and Anthony on accordion. They're joined on the bill by Jude Moreau and the Bon Temps Playboys and Susan Torres y Conjunto Los Pinkys, so the evening covers more than just one style.
