A night of improvised horror comedy where the audience decides the characters, locations and fears, followed by spooky improv games.
Spontaneity Improv Co. are bringing a horror-themed night to Rox Live on Thursday, October 22, with Spooky Spectacular. It's a night of improvised horror comedy built around a collection of ridiculous games and challenges inspired by scary movies and horror tropes, so if you've got a soft spot for the slasher flicks and creature features that usually pop up this time of year, this is right up your alley.
The thing about improv is that the audience calls the shots, and that's exactly how this one works. Before the group gets thrown into the games, they'll be asking you to decide the characters, the locations, the fears, and the horrifying situations the performers have to face. Once those details are set, the cast takes them and runs with them through a series of spooky improv games, so what happens on stage depends entirely on what you throw at them.
It's a bit of a twist on the usual improv format. Instead of just making up scenes on the fly, the performers are working within a set of games and challenges, each one drawing from the tropes of horror cinema. The company describes it as a show where the lights are low, the rules are strange, and the audience never knows what's waiting around the corner. If you've spent any time watching horror movies, you know the drillβthe setup is half the fun, and the punchline usually comes when things go sideways in the most absurd way possible.
