Sherry Ryan

Sherry Ryan plays Bearly's House of Blues & Ribs on Thursday 24 September, starting at 8:00 PM. She's a singer-songwriter from St. John's, Newfoundland, and one of Atlantic Canada's best-loved artists. Her vocal style blends folk-pop, country and Irish-Newfoundland roots, and she's been called St. John's answer to Lucinda Williams and compared to John Prine.

Much of the material she's known for comes from her fifth album, Shout for More, which draws on her father's 1950s railway encounter with the Wreckhouse winds. That story is the subject of the single 'Stop the Trains', a song that's since become part of the Newfoundland canon. It's the kind of thing that gives you a sense of where she's coming from — the East Coast roots are right there in the writing.

It's a solo bill, so the night is built around her voice and her songs. If you're familiar with the Newfoundland songwriting tradition, you'll recognise the threads she's pulling from; if not, it's a good place to start.

Bearly's is at 1579 Grafton Street in downtown Halifax. The show starts at 8:00 PM, and it's pay-what-you-can, so you can decide what you want to give on the night.
