Chris Murphy & The Halifax All Stars play The Carleton on Friday, October 2, as part of the Halifax Urban Folk Festival. It's a bill that brings together a local staple and a few guests from across the country, with the night starting with a songwriters' circle of Billy Raffoul, Ria Mae and Noah Malcolm before Murphy takes the stage.
Most of you know Chris Murphy from Sloan, where he's been for over 30 years, but he's also made a name for himself in supergroups. He was in TUNS in 2015 with Matt Murphy and Mike O'Neill, the Trans-Canada Highwaymen in 2017 with Steven Page, Moe Berg and Craig Northey, and Anyway Gang in 2018 with Sam Roberts, David Monks and Menno Versteeg. He still plays solo acoustic shows, and Sloan's album Based on the Best Seller, released last fall, landed a track on the Polaris Song Prize shortlist. He's also one of the few artists to have appeared on the cover of Exclaim!.
The opening circle brings in a few different voices. Billy Raffoul, from Leamington, Ontario, is making his East Coast debut and is the first HUFF artist with over a billion collective Spotify streams and upwards of two billion YouTube views, coming off two full-length albums released last summer. Halifax pop artist Ria Mae is platinum-selling, and PEI's Noah Malcolm has won four Music PEI Awards and an East Coast Music Award. Between the three of them, the night gets going with a fair bit of ground covered before Murphy and the All Stars take over.
