An evening event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, featuring welcome remarks, exhibition exploration, refreshments and a scavenger hunt.
Safe Haven: Canada and the 1956 Hungarian Refugees opens at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 on Wednesday, October 7, from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. It's an evening put on in partnership with the Embassy of Hungary to Canada, and it marks the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and the arrival of about 38,000 Hungarian refugees in Canada. Those families fled the Soviet invasion of their homeland, and many of them entered the country through Pier 21, so the museum is a natural place for the occasion.
The night starts with welcome remarks from both the Museum and the Embassy, followed by light refreshments. From there, you can spend the rest of the evening exploring the Safe Haven: Canada and the 1956 Hungarian Refugees exhibition. If you're in the mood to dig a bit deeper, there's a special edition scavenger hunt on hand, designed to lead you to more Hungarian stories scattered across the museum's displays. It's the kind of thing you can do at your own pace—you can stick to the main exhibition or take the hunt and see what else you find.
