Public talk by Koun Franz, Abbot of Thousand Harbours Zen, on meeting the present moment through Buddhist teachings.
Koun Franz is giving a public talk at St. Andrew's United Church on Sunday, August 2, from 5:00 to 6:30 pm. It's called How to Meet This Moment, and it's hosted by the Thousand Harbours Zen community.
Franz is the Abbot of Thousand Harbours Zen here in Halifax and the Guiding Kyoshi of Soto Zen North America. He's built the talk around the things that weigh on most of us right now: the general state of the world and the way modern life can start to feel overwhelming. From there, he looks at it through Buddhist teachings. His point is that the practice isn't about finding a way out of suffering, but rather a way into it—engaging with the unknowable and the vast complexity of being alive.
It's a public talk, so you don't need any background in Zen or Buddhism to come along. If you've been feeling that same sense of things being a bit much lately, that's exactly where the conversation starts. The whole thing is hosted by the Thousand Harbours Zen community, and it takes place in the lower fellowship room of the church.
