Cérémonie de commémoration du Grand Dérangement

The Cérémonie de commémoration du Grand Dérangement takes place at the Monument aux Acadiens on the Halifax Waterfront on Tuesday, July 28. It's a ceremony held in memory of the Grand Dérangement, the forced deportation of the Acadian people from the Maritimes in the mid-18th century. The monument itself stands at 1341 Lower Water Street, right on the waterfront, and serves as the focal point for the afternoon.

Two local organisations are behind it: FANE (the Fédération acadienne de la Nouvelle-Écosse) and the Conseil communautaire du Grand-Havre. FANE is the province's Acadian federation, and the Conseil is a community council based in the Grand Havre area. Together they've put this together as a public act of remembrance, so it's open to anyone who wants to attend.

The ceremony runs from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm, a ninety-minute window that puts it right in the late afternoon. It's a free event, so there's no ticket to book or fee to pay — you just show up at the monument on the waterfront. If you're coming from downtown, it's a short walk down to the water's edge.
