Kinetic theatre show featuring early and exquisite work by Eduard Bersudsky, with sound and lighting, exploring the mechanical choreography of the human spirit.
Wheels of Life opens at Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre & Gallery on Thursday 15 October, and it's a long run β it stays on through December, with dates on the 17th and 18th of October, then 22nd, 24th, 25th, 29th and 31st, before continuing into November and December. It's a kinetic theatre show, which is a bit of a rarity in the city, and this one centres on the work of Eduard Bersudsky.
What you'll see is a collection of some of Bersudsky's earliest kinetic artworks, made in Russia, shown alongside a selection of his more recent work. The standout is the Wooden Kinemats, a Soviet-era collection that sits at the heart of the show. The whole thing is built around uniquely crafted kinetic sculptures, synchronised soundtracks and bespoke lighting: hundreds of carved figures and pieces of old scrap perform a mechanical choreography that tells funny and tragic stories of the human spirit. It's a physical, moving thing rather than a static display.
There are a couple of practical bits to keep in mind before you book. For parts of the show, you'll need to move around the performance space, though there's seating in some gallery sections and lightweight stools can be supplied on request. It's also worth noting that the darker atmosphere and themes make it more suited to adults; it isn't recommended for most children. The show runs for 45 minutes, and there's no late admittance, so it's best to be on time.
