A powerful theatre production uncovering the untold stories of women persecuted during the Scottish Witch Trials, set in 17th-century Torryburn.
The Seven Witches of Torryburn plays at Cottiers on Monday 19 October, a theatre production that looks at the Scottish Witch Trials from the inside. It's written and directed by Brandon Ferguson, and it's based on a true story and real people, one of whom was Lilias Adie.
The play is set in 17th-century Torryburn as the trials reach a fevered peak. It follows seven ordinary women accused of the unthinkable in 1666, a time when fear turned neighbour against neighbour. Ferguson describes it as a stark, lyrical reckoning with power, belief and the price of unenlightened times. The focus stays on the women themselves rather than the trials as a whole, and it draws on the actual lives of those caught up in the panic.
