The Klittens headline Nice N Sleazy on Sunday 25 October, a Glasgow stop on their current tour. They're an Amsterdam-based indie collective, five musicians who describe themselves as untrained but unbothered, and that attitude runs through the whole thing. They combine a love of pop music with dark sentiments and a punk ethos, and the sound they build from it ranges from dark post-punk to danceable songs about grandmas.
That mix of the pop and the bleak is where they sit. Their influences are as varied as they sound, with The Ronettes, MF Doom, Dry Cleaning and Kate Bush all mentioned in one breath. It's a strange set of references, but it gives you a fair idea of the ground they cover: the girl-group melodies of the fifties, the deadpan delivery of modern post-punk, and the art-pop of the eighties, all held together by a DIY approach that they apply to everything from songwriting and releasing music to tour management. What started as a creative and political outlet eventually became a musical life mission for the band.
On stage, the line-up is Yaƫl Dekker on vocals, Winnie Conradi and Katja Kahana on guitars, Marrit Meinema on bass guitar and Laurie Zantinge on drums. The show is for over-16s, with under-18s admitted with an adult.
