The Scottish Chamber Orchestra, led by Andrew Manze with cellist Amalie Stalheim, plays Tchaikovsky's Serenade and Rococo Variations at City Halls.
The Scottish Chamber Orchestra are at City Halls on Friday 6 November, with Principal Guest Conductor Andrew Manze leading the orchestra. It's part of their Classical Revolution series for the 26/27 season, and the programme runs from Nordic refinement through to Russian Romanticism.
The night opens with Lars-Erik Larsson's Lyric Fantasy, a graceful and atmospheric piece that sets a relatively quiet tone. From there, the energy shifts with Anders Hillborg's Cello Concerto, a bold and imaginative work that relies on striking contrasts, moments of delicate intimacy and brilliant virtuosity. Principal Guest cellist Amalie Stalheim takes the lead on that one, and she stays on for the second half of the evening.
She returns for Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations, an elegant set of variations on a theme, followed by the Serenade, a masterpiece described as full of soaring melodies and lyrical warmth. Between the two, you get Tchaikovsky from two very different angles: the playful, structured variations and the sweeping, romantic lines of the Serenade.
