The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ryan Wigglesworth, perform Brahms' Second Symphony alongside Schumann and a world premiere violin concerto.
The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra are at Glasgow City Halls on Thursday 10 December, with chief conductor Ryan Wigglesworth leading the night. It's part of the orchestra's Glasgow Series 2026/27 and their Thursday Night Series, which gives you up to 30% off if you book four to ten concerts across the season.
The programme opens with Robert Schumann's Overture, Scherzo and Finale, Op. 52. Schumann actually thought the piece was too joyful to be called a symphony, and that lightness carries through to the second half, too. The main event is Brahms' Symphony No. 2 in D major, which he wrote while on holiday in the Austrian Alps; that sense of sunshine and soaring vistas glows in every note.
In between, there's a world premiere: a violin concerto by Matthew Kaner, co-commissioned by the BBC SSO and the Amarillo Symphony, with violinist Benjamin Baker on the solo part. Wigglesworth, who is a composer himself, has built the evening around new music and the Romantic spirit, pairing the new concerto with the two Romantic masterpieces. It's a night that puts a brand-new work right alongside two of the big names from the 19th century.
