A contemporary classical music concert featuring works by Max Richter, Philip Glass and John Adams, with Mari Samuelsen play-directing and David Brophy conducting.
Max Richter is coming to City Halls on Friday 23 October, as part of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra's 2026/27 New Dimensions series. It's a contemporary classical bill that puts Richter alongside two other heavyweights of the minimalist tradition, Philip Glass and John Adams, so it's a bit more than a single-composer night.
The programme opens with Richter's Opus 2020, followed by Philip Glass's Company and John Adams's The Chairman Dances. The second half belongs to Richter's Recomposed: Vivaldi - The Four Seasons, his well-known reimagining of the Baroque classic. Violinist Mari Samuelsen will be play-directing that one, with David Brophy conducting the rest of the evening.
Richter's work sits at the intersection of minimalism, electronica and cinematic soundscapes, and he's spent the last couple of decades carving out a space between the concert hall and the studio. This particular performance is also being recorded by BBC Radio 3 for broadcast at a later date, so the Glasgow night will end up on the air.
