The RCS Chamber Orchestra returns to the Stevenson Hall, conducted by Donnie Deacon and MMus Conducting student Claudia Jablonski, performing Mendelssohn's 'The Hebrides, Op.26' and Beethoven's Symphony No.8, Op.93.
The RCS Chamber Orchestra are back at Stevenson Hall on Wednesday 11 November, their return to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with two of the most familiar names in the classical repertoire. It's a double bill of Mendelssohn and Beethoven, both of them works that lean on a particular kind of mood rather than heavy drama.
The first half is Mendelssohn's The Hebrides, Op.26, which took shape after he visited the island of Staffa. It's a piece that draws its energy from the landscape — the jagged coast and the Atlantic — and it's one of those works that works best when you can hear the water in it. The second half is Beethoven's Symphony No.8, Op.93, which sits in a very different place. It's often described as one of his most joyful and charming symphonies, a bright, spirited thing that doesn't carry the weight of his later, more troubled works.
The evening is shared between two conductors. Donnie Deacon takes the podium alongside Claudia Jablonski, an MMus Conducting student, so you'll hear the orchestra under two different bats across the two pieces. It's a nice way to see how a student conductor works their way through a full programme.
