A critically acclaimed true story of Jacob Dunne, directed by Adam Penford, exploring the devastating impact of one-punch violence.
Punch comes to the Citizens Theatre on Tuesday 30 March, running for one week only until Saturday 3 April. It's the true story of Jacob Dunne, a teenager from Nottingham whose Saturday-night thrills with friends led to fatal consequences after an impulsive punch. After serving prison time, lost and directionless, he met Joan and David, the parents of his victim James, and that meeting sparked a profound transformation.
James Graham wrote the play, and he's an Olivier Award winner known for Dear England, This House, and the BBC's Sherwood. Adam Penford directs, and the production design is by Anna Fleischle, with lighting by Robbie Butler, sound by Alexandra Faye Braithwaite and movement direction by Leanne Pinder. The cast is yet to be announced. It's a heavy subject, and the play is dedicated to James Hodgkinson and all victims of one-punch violence. It's recommended for ages 12 and over.
Before it reaches Glasgow, Punch has already picked up two Olivier Awards, including Best New Play, as well as the Critics' Circle Award for Best New Play and The Standard Award for Best Play. It follows sold-out runs at the Nottingham Playhouse and the Young Vic, and it's opening simultaneously on Broadway and in the West End. WhatsOnStage called it a 'powerhouse of a production'.
