Anthony Almeida's new production of Shakespeare's iconic tragedy, exploring love and hate in a contemporary lens.
Anthony Almeida brings a new production of Othello to the Citizens Theatre from 27 October to 7 November. It's a co-production between the Citz, Northern Stage and HOME Manchester, in association with Royal & Derngate, so it's a big one coming to the Main Theatre on Gorbals Street.
Almeida describes this version as being as much about love as it is about hate, and the staging focuses on Othello and Desdemona's newlywed life. That's where Iago's manipulations start — in whispers — and where fear, passion and paranoia simmer just beneath the surface of a marriage that's only just begun. It's a contemporary take on one of Shakespeare's most famous tragedies, so it'll feel familiar but seen through a modern lens.
The cast includes Rebecca Banatvala, Chris Garner, Phoebe Smyth, Will Stanton, Matthieu Sys, Maanuv Thiara, Dwane Walcott and Grace Hodgett. It runs about 2 hours and 50 minutes including the interval, and it's recommended for ages 14 and over.
